Fast Track Assessment of Haematuria MUH

Selected patients with frank haematuria (2 per week) will be processed through a rapid assessment facility at the Mercy University Hospital. These patients will attend the OPD on Tuesday morning at 8am. Patients will be advised in advance that their visit to the hospital will last approximately 6 hours and that they are required to attend fasting and take a laxative 24 hours previously (IVU protocol).

The following details the process of assessment of these patients:

  1. 2 samples of urine are collected for microscopy (and subsequent culture) and cytology on arrival at the OPD
  2. A history and physical examination is performed in the OPD
  3. Intravenous urography (& Ultrasound is performed in the X-ray department)
  4. Flexible cystoscopy in St. John's Unit

It is important that the patients are processed in the order described above.
At the end of the visit a letter will be dictated to the patient's GP detailing the results of these studies and a plan of further management if required. It is anticipated that all results (excluding urine culture) will be available at the end of the visit. The urine cultures will be checked at 48 hours and acted on as appropriate at that point.
