Refer complex (Please see Maxillofacial injuries section in "Wounds" section) facial injury to the maxillofacial / dental SHO on-call at CUH.
All referrals to be discussed with an Emergency Medicine consultant (through the EM registrar) The following will be seen:
- Appropriate patients discharged from CDU
- Referrals from GPs and Physios (accepted by EM consultant)
- Those called back due to X-ray reports
- ? Scaphoid
- Those agreed by the consultant
The Emergency Department Review Clinic
Criteria for referral to the ED Review Clinic
- Problems suitable for the ED Review Clinic include, infections with potential complications or minor hand injuries with doubtful functioning, possible scaphoid injuries (normal scaphoid views) etc.
- The common denominator is that further care is needed and is most appropriately provided by EM staff.
- The clinic is not for second opinions which should, whenever possible, be obtained at the first attendance.
- The review clinic is not a regular "check up" after a brief "look see" on the patient's first attendance. Inappropriate referrals include knee injuries (unless referred back from physiotherapy), head injuries, headaches, ankle sprains, back sprains, soft tissue foot injuries etc.
Fracture clinic at CUH
- Please ensure fracture clinic referral form is completed
- Patients will not be reviewed without relevant documentation and x-rays

- The fracture clinic at CUH accepts referrals from the emergency departments at CUH,MUH,SIVUH, Mallow and Bantry General Hospitals suing the above forms. If patients treated in another orthopaedic unit (in Ireland or abroad) require fracture care, they can be referred to the CUH fracture clinic directly. The do not have to attend the CUH emergency department. Faxed or emailed referrals from the patient's GP or referring orthopaedic unit will be received by the on call orthopaedic consultants' secretary. Please see Mr. Mark Dolan's letter.
Soft Tissue (Plastic Surgery) Clinic
information
- Please discuss cases with on-call plastics team before all referrals
- Please ensue only appropriate referrals (criteria here)
- Patients will not be seen without a completed referral form (and relevant documentation & x-rays)
If a patient attended an orthopaedic unit in another part of this country or abroad and has returned, requiring a fracture care, a CUH fracture clinic appointment can be made directly without the patient having to be seen in the CUH emergency department. The appointment can be made by direct referral (by fax or letter) from the initial treating hospital or the patient's GP to the relevant orthopaedic consultant (or the orthopaedic consultant on call that day). Physiotherapy Clinic CUH
Referral Guidelines
Duration post injury is irrelevant. The consultation consists of

Physiotherapy Clinic MUH
Criteria for Physiotherapy Review Clinic
- Acute joint & soft tissue injury
- Ligamentous injury with no associated bony injury
- Muscle haematoma
Purpose of Physiotherapy ED Review Clinic
- Early assessment of injury
- Advice & education
- Teach basic exercises, stretches & gait re-education as appropriate to facilitate return to activity
- Refer for further outpatient physiotherapy if necessary
- Refer back if further investigation / management needed
- Treatment and discharge
Procedure
- Medics will give patient a Referral form ED reception will book the patient into the review clinic via Keogh Physio software package
- Physiotherapist will work alongside Consultant allowing communication and joint management of injuries
- Initially will run Monday and Friday mornings – 9 – 12.30pm.
- Physiotherapist will be responsible for booking/arranging outpatient physiotherapy if required.
Sexual Assault Unit SIVH
Staff at the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit in the South Infirmary/Victoria University Hospital are committed to providing the highest quality service to all their clients in a sensitive, appropriate and non-judgemental way. Their focus is on the safety, physical and psychological needs of our clients and their right to privacy and confidentiality. Their informed decision will be respected at every stage of the process and their sense of personal control will be supported and encouraged.
The unit provides a comprehensive and coordinated forensic and medical
aftercare service to both males and females of 14 years and upwards,
who have experienced rape or sexual assault within the last 7 days.
It is a free and confidential service and can be accessed via the
Gardaí, General Practitioner, Rape Crisis Centre, Emergency Department
or self-referral.
Services provided include:
- A dedicated unit where clients who have experienced Rape or Sexual Assault can be examined and treated in a holistic way
- Emotional and practical support consistent with the wishes of the individual
- Liaison with the Sexual Violence Centre according to the client's wishes
- Assist and support clients by appropriate provision of information, liaison, referrals and advocacy
- Forensic medical examination
- Post coital contraception and pregnancy testing service
- Screening for sexually transmitted infections
- Answering queries from rape victims and their relatives and directing them to the appropriate services i.e. Gardaí, Sexual Violence Centre, Social Work Dept. and Oss Cork (domestic violence)

If the client is deemed unfit to travel due to injuries sustained,
SATU team can attend the ED. Only call the team when the client has
been medically sorted out so that they can do the Forensic examination
without any interruption.
ENT Clinics at CUH
Mr. Peter O’Sullivan, Consultant ENT surgeon based in the South Infirmary/Victoria Hospital holds an outpatient clinic on Monday mornings in the Blackwater Suite in the CUH from 9 am to 12 noon. At this clinic he also sees inpatients whereby the team need to contact the Blackwater suite during the clinic time. Out patient referral letters can be sent to his secretary at: Terri Dineen, Neurology Department, CUH. Phone (021) 492 2856. Her office is the Old Central appointments office on the outpatient corridor.
Mr. Pat Sheehan Consultant Ortolaryngologist will be holding a weekly clinic on a Tuesday afternoon's in Cork University Hospital. The first clinic is scheduled for Tuesday 24th March 2009. It will be Head and Neck Surgery clinic. It will have a particular interest in seeing any patients with any kind of neck lumps or masses, oral cavity lesions, hoarseness or voice problems, recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy, any kind of Head and Neck Cancer, anterior skull base tumours or other skull base pathology including CSF leaks or encephalocoeles, salivary gland pathology, etc. Please forward referrals via Ms. Betty Cullinane (x22856).
