When to call ITU

RED call:  Only use if want ITU to come immediately

 

Ambulance call identifying imminent arrival of

  • Any airway problem
  • In trauma: 
    • Respiratory rate < 10 or >29
    • Systolic BP < 90 mmHg
    • GCS < 9 or unprotected airway

Identification within the department of a non-cardiac-arrest patient requiring Immediate intubation

AMBER call: If the following criteria are present on planned transfer when leaving the Emergency Department

The criteria are a modified version of the hospital MET criteria:
Airway

Threatened

Breathing

Respiratory rate < 5
Respiratory rate > 36

Circulation

Pulse rate < 40
Pulse rate > 140
Systolic blood pressure < 90

Neurology

Sudden fall in conscious level   (Fall in GCS > 2 points)
Repeated or prolonged seizures

Biochemistry

Lactate >3mmol/L
